Neil Armstrong - "Extravaganza" photo from his private collection
($250)
This
listing is for an 8x10" photograph from the personal collection of Neil
Armstrong (and possibly annotated by Armstrong himself). This photo was
taken at the "Apollo 11 Extravaganza" in August 1969, just days after
the astronauts left their lunar quarantine. This particular photo shows
Flip Wilson during his comedy performance at the event.
When
I bought this photo, it came as part of a set. When I received them, I
found that all of them had been hand-annotated on the back in pencil. To
me, the handwriting looks identical to Neil's, so I sent scans of the
items to Steve Zarelli, the world's foremost space autograph
authenticator. Steve said that the similarities were strong enough to
make it a possibility, but I couldn't get a definite confirmation with
such limited writing. A few letters/numbers weren't enough to be
certain. So unfortunately, getting the handwriting positively matched is
not going to be possible. It will likely fail autograph authentication,
simply because there's not enough to judge. However, I've included a
few comparison photos here to display the similarities. The "W", "S",
"2", and "8" examples in particular are very distinctive. The photo for
sale here has the "S-14-6" notation.
This item was obtained directly from Neil's sons. When Neil died in 2012, most of his collection was given to Janet, his first wife. And then when Janet died in 2018, the collection was passed down to their sons, who decided to auction it off the following year. To maintain authenticity, they had each item encapsulated in a tamper-proof case and authenticated by CAG. The only way to open the case is to break it, so you can be certain that the item inside is genuine. In addition, the winner will receive the original Certificate of Authenticity with a matching serial number, which has been hand-signed by Neil's sons. The case arrived with some minor scratches from being handled in the auction house, but it's still in new condition otherwise.
US Shipping for this item is $8. International Shipping is $27 (depending on the country, additional Import/VAT fees may be charged by your local Post Office). I have many other items for sale, and I'm happy to combine shipping rates on additional items.
